Sam Sykes is an associate in the Atlanta office of Hall Booth Smith. He earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from Atlanta's John Marshall Law School. While in law school, he received six CALI Awards for Academic Excellence and was a Sara and Michael Salomon Prize Award Recipient. He was active in the Student Bar Association, serving as secretary and 2 years as a class representative. He was also an Office of Academic Achievement Fellow from 2012-2014. While in law school, Mr. Sykes interned in all three legal communities (corporations, governmental, and private practice) to acquire invaluable insight for future clients.
Before moving into civil practice, Mr. Sykes served as an Assistant Solicitor-General in the State Court of Gwinnett County, gaining comprehensive courtroom experience. He has successfully prosecuted hundreds of criminal cases, solo-chaired multiple jury trials from voir dire to verdict, tried several bench trials, argued motions on behalf of the State, and negotiated a multitude of plea agreements.
An Atlanta native, Mr. Sykes attended Woodward Academy, and received his B.A. in Political Science from Southern Methodist University. Mr. Sykes is married to Laura Parker Sykes, and has one son. He and his family are members of Peachtree Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Sykes has represented numerous companies, focusing primarily on litigation prevention through advising employers and employees on best practices to avoid potential claims for discrimination, harassment, and reporting procedures mandated by governmental agencies.
Mr. Sykes’ practice focuses heavily on representing and defending clients involved in general liability cases, to include slip and fall accidents, dog bites, HOA disputes, premises liability, products liability, trucking and automotive accidents, and cases involving catastrophic injuries. Mr. Sykes has represented general liability clients throughout the State of Georgia.
Mr. Sykes has extensive knowledge of issues involving landlord/tenant negotiations and disputes, and commercial/retail leases. His practice also focuses on advising clients involved in large land assemblages, joint ventures, and advising both real estate developers and brokers regarding construction documents, contracts, and zoning issues.
Mr. Sykes maintains an estate planning practice, and regularly advises clients on issues that are crucially important to their families and their future. Mr. Sykes has helped clients strategize and create Wills, Trusts, Advanced Healthcare Directive, Powers of Attorney, Prenuptial Agreements, and more. Mr. Sykes works in concert with Hall Booth Smith’s other estate planning attorneys around the State of Georgia to provide full service throughout the state, and will work with you to create an estate plan that protects your family’s assets, while planning for the future.
DUI/Traffic Ticket Defense
As a former prosecutor, Mr. Sykes has extensive training, experience, and knowledge of the legal and strategic aspects of defending clients charged with traffic tickets and DUI around the State of Georgia. While Mr. Sykes maintains his civil practice, he remains passionate about defending his clients charged with traffic violations, including CDL drivers, and applies his insight gained as a prosecutor to obtain consistently favorable results for his clients. Mr. Sykes tirelessly fights the charges pending against his clients, and has tried many jury trials when necessary to protect and defend his clients’ rights. Mr. Sykes also regularly assists in having his clients’ criminal records expunged.
